The first day of the Hop 255 blog!
By way of contrast, "Yahoo!" turns 10 years old this week. Well, sort of as it was created in 1994 and incorporated in 1995. For those of us that preferred search engines to directories, AltaVista was probably the leading search engine in the mid to late 1990s with tools like "Babel Fish" and the underrated "Cow9". They lost the plot during the bubble years and eventually ended up as a forgotten part of Yahoo! Fortunately, along came Google.
Lots of memories at the Netrospective with 100 moments of the Web (the Internet anyway since they include everything from webcasts to file-sharing). Hard to fit everything in but internet telephony (VoIP from VocalTec, the first freeworld dial-up link to the PSTN and on through to Skype) would seem the most obvious omission in terms of impact. On the other hand, it is their party so they get to choose the date and invitees. Happy birthday Yahoo!
